Description

Officer's saber of the Caucasian type, model 1913. Total length - 923mm. Blade length with hilt (without sheath) 892mm. Blade length without handle - 750 mm. The blade width at the heel is 36 mm. Sheath length - 858mm. The handle is made of wood and decorated with brass inserts on one side with a floral ornament, and on the other with the monogram of Emperor Nicholas II. The wooden scabbard is covered with leather and decorated with brass plates. The blade has two longitudinal grooves. There is an engraving on both sides of the blade: on one side there is a double-headed eagle, on the other - the monogram of Emperor Nicholas II. On the edge of the blade there is an inscription: “Zlat.Or.Fabr.”. This model was approved by Emperor Nicholas II on March 5, 1913, for the anniversary of the reign of the Romanovs, by order of the military department No. 539. Intended to be worn by officers and generals of the Caucasian Cossack troops. There is an opinion that the sketch of the design of the brass parts of the handle and the device was made by the artist Vasnetsov. According to a certificate from the head of the history department of the Zlatoust Museum of Local Lore, no more than 100 checkers of this type were made in Zlatoust in the period from 1913 to 1917. All of their specimens that have survived to date are extremely rare. No more than 10 pieces are known in collections.
